After the half Africans we knew we had to have Avongara (Full Africans) Basenjis. A big thanks goes to Wilma Bauer for trusting us with our first......Avongara Katinda Mimba (Mindy). You can read about her on the BCOA African Stock Project at this link. http://www.basenji.org/african/K_Mimba.htm#top After Mindy we were really hooked on the Avongara B's and knew that was the way we had to go. A couple of years after getting Mindy Wilma was supposed to get a pup back from Mindy's litter sister, but when he was shipped it quickly became obvious it would not work out with Wilma so we made the decision to keep him instead of putting him through the added stress of shipping him back. So there entered Avongara Mmoju Natu. aka Corky or Pooh. You can check him out at http://www.basenji.org/african/Mmoju.htm#top Next in line came Avongara Mkando the gentlest Basenji I have ever met. By now it was time to breed Mindy and since we couldn't use Corky and Mkando didn't seem to have what we were looking for for Mindy, the search began. We finally decided on an Avongara dog in Arizona, but Mindy would not cooperate and we missed her heat. During this time we continued looking for the PERFECT mate for Mindy. When I saw a picture of Avongara Dahab by Itzyu (Trampus) http://www.basenji.org/african/Dahab.htm.#top it was instant love. Then I got the chance to meet him and the rest is history. Since Mindy is so "difficult" in her heat cycles, Pam and Sheila were kind enough to let me bring Trampus home to stay with us untill Mindy could be bred. Trampus is such a love bug that I don't know what we will do when we have to send him home. He fit in here like he had been here all his life. However, whenever Pam and Sheila decide they have to have him back I guess we will not be able to refuse because we were successful in getting Mindy bred on July 28, 2002. At the time of this writing the pups are not on the ground and I can hardly wait. While we were waiting for Mindy to "cooperate" we got a call from Lisa Auerbach (Trampus' breeder) that she had another one of that litter back and wanted to know if we were interested in him. Of course how do you say no to another Avongara, so Avongara Panjama Itzya (PJ) http://www.basenji.org/african/Panjama.htm#top came to stay. That is all the Avongara's here at this time, but with the birth of Mindy's pups I am sure there will be more. |

FIRST THERE WERE THE HALF AFRICANS: |

Our first experience with the Africans came when we decided to breed our all American Girl, Tori (Ch. Karlyn's Inquisitor of Woz) to a Full African Boy. We decided on Jon and Vicky Curby's boy, Diggy (Avongara Diagba). While very different from what we were used to, Diggy soon stole our hearts, and his pups were more than we could ever have imagined. Tori and Diggy produced five pups. A gorgeous dark brindle boy, a rather plain marked red and white boy, a striking red and white girl and of course the Brindle twins, Dilly and Dally. We had high hopes for the dark brindle boy, but shortly before he turned 6 months old, he burrowed out under our chain link fence (lined with rail-road ties) and was hit by a car and killed. We were devistated and have never had another brindle boy of his quality, but life goes on, so we focused on the twin girls Dilly and Dally for showing. We almost lost the red and white girl when it was time to wean them because she refused to eat dog food! We finally discovered that she would eat chicken if we cooked it and let her rip it apart. If only we had known about BARF at that time, we would not have had any problem. But back to the girls....While Dilly was, in my opinion, the better conformation wise, she did not like to show alone. She did manage to get some points before we decided not to put her under that stress, but she really loved to show as a brace with her sister. They took numerous BIS and BISS brace awards before we decided to breed the girls. There was a terrible fight between them when they were both pregnant (a mistake that won't be made again) and now they hate the sight of each other. |

The kidz: Tugger, Quest, JP, and of course Dilly & Dally |
